Brighton hopeful of tying star down to new deal amid Man United interest

Manchester United are going to prioritise a move for a striker this summer, having made signing a midfielder or two the prime target last year.

Erik ten Hag’s rebuild at Old Trafford is far from over and the next phase will be to add another goalscorer, with the side currently struggling to score goals consistently.

Marcus Rashford is the only player to reach double figures for the season and the Reds have just two players in the top 50 goalscorers in the Premier League so far this season.

Victor Osimhen, the Napoli star, has been linked to the club and Harry Kane is a player United have courted for a long time. Recently, Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson has been paired with a move to Old Trafford.

Now, it is being reported that Brighton are hopeful of securing Ferguson’s long-term future by tying him down to a new deal as the Champions League hopefuls look to fend off interest from United.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who say that Brighton want Ferguson to extend his contract this month, with both United and Tottenham interested in the Irish international.

As per the report, Ferguson grew up as a United supporter and idolised Wayne Rooney but Brighton are in no rush to sell the 18-year-old, with only a ‘silly’ figure said to be enough to convince them.

Brighton are expecting interest from a host of Premier League clubs but it’s claimed that Roberto De Zerbi’s men expect him to stay and develop at the Amex Stadium.

SN’s verdict…
In more than one way, United’s transfer window will rely on whether they land a striker or not. United have severely lacked a consistent goalscorer in addition to Rashford this season.

Their goal difference in the Premier League is a testament to that and adding another player with a finishing touch would make the world of difference.

At 18, Ferguson is still rather untested and there are no guarantees that he will develop into the player United need. But thus far, he is certainly showing signs of promise.
