Newcastle United’s match-winner Callum Wilson has admitted today’s result against Manchester United has made amends for losing the Carabao Cup final in February.
The Red Devils sustained a 2-0 loss at St. James’ Park to dent their hopes of an easy route to a top-four finish. They are now winless and goalless in three consecutive league games.
United are also winless against the Magpies in the league this season, with the reverse fixture being a 0-0 stalemate back in October last year.
However, the Reds did end a six-year trophy drought against the Magpies when they won 2-0 at Wembley Stadium to secure the first piece of silverware on offer this season, and it was that game that was seemingly used as fuel to Newcastle’s fire this afternoon.
Post-match, Sky Sports quizzed Wilson on whether or not today was about ‘getting revenge’ for their League Cup woes, and he responded: “Yeah, I think we were disappointed with the final. We know that had gone but it left a sour taste in our mouths and it was one of those things we had to put right today, especially at home, in front of the fans. They deserved that today.”
