Rio Ferdinand claims Liverpool result after 7-0 celebrations proves small-club mentality

Rio Ferdinand slammed Liverpool’s “small-club mentality” while aiming a dig at punditry duo Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness.

Liverpool beat Manchester United 7-0 in the Premier League in a freak result before going on, a week later, to lose 1-0 against relegation contenders Bournemouth.

Ferdinand was not impressed by Carragher and Souness’ on-air celebrations as they gloated across the studio towards his former team-mates, Gary Neville and Roy Keane, who gave it as good as he got it throughout Sky Sports’ coverage of the game at Anfield.

In reaction to the result, Ferdinand said on his FIVE podcast: “This is a small club mentality. That screams small club.”

Ferdinand also hit out at Carragher and Souness, saying: “The way Souness and Carragher were celebrating, the way they were trying to antagonise the guys [Roy Keane and Gary Neville], and then their team goes and does that at the weekend.

“They should be ashamed of themselves.”

Liverpool fans have reacted in a similar fashion across social media. They see it as their cup final for the season because they know they won’t be winning anything else.

The Scousers now run the risk of missing out on Champions League football next season. They have some big games coming up and can’t seem to find any real winning momentum.
