Manchester United confirm Wout Weghorst shirt number

Manchester United have confirmed new signing Wout Weghorst’s shirt number as the Netherlands international closes in on his debut for the club.

A deal to sign the former Bundesliga star was finalised last week but he was not available to feature in the stellar derby win over Manchester City earlier this weekend.

Weghorst spent the first half of this season on loan at Besiktas but that agreement was ripped up as United negotiated a compensation package with the Turkish giants.

Now, hours after Weghorst was spotted in training at Carrington for the first time, it has been confirmed that he will be wearing the number 27 shirt. The news was confirmed on the official Manchester United website.

The number was vacated last summer when Alex Telles, who had occupied the digits for the last two seasons, joined La Liga outfit Sevilla on loan. Marouane Fellaini had worn the number prior to Telles.

SN’s verdict…
Weghorst will give very little attention to the numbers on his back but to supporters, these things can bear a lot of meaning. In this particular case, Weghorst will be focused on making the upcoming six months as memorable as possible.

There is no option or obligation to buy in the agreement negotiated with Burnley and he is expected to link up with Vincent Kompany’s men at the end of the season.

But a promising half-season at Old Trafford could open up a host of avenues for the forward and if United’s financial state of play remains the same, another term in Manchester could be a possibility.
