Ruud van Nistelrooy backs Wout Weghorst to step up at Manchester United

Wout Weghorst has joined Manchester United on loan until the end of the season and former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has backed the fellow Dutchman to make the step up at Old Trafford.

Weghorst completed his loan move to Manchester United on Thursday after completing his medical and the paperwork required to secure temporary switch from Burnley.

In turn, United have paid Turkish side Besiktas a compensation fee to release the striker from his recent loan spell.

This is a striker Ten Hag will know from his time in the Netherlands. The 30-year-old also impressed for the Netherlands at the World Cup, so he has already proved he can perform on the biggest stage.

Van Nistelrooy, who is currently in charge of PSV Eindhoven, has backed Weghorst to succeed at United.

Speaking to Voetbal International, the former Manchester United said: “I think Wout has so much character and qualities that he will stand there. I experienced him with the Oranje. He’s just a whopper of a guy, with an incredibly competitive character. We also saw that at the World Cup.

“Wout is ready for such a step. And he will make his contribution there, I am 100 percent convinced of that. He has the qualities to make an impact at United.”

Ten Hag has already ruled Weghorst out of the Manchester derby on Saturday.

Unfortunately, the striker wasn’t registered in time.
