Erik ten Hag rules out Wout Weghorst debut in Manchester derby

Manchester United are close to completing a loan deal for Wout Weghorst, but Erik ten Hag has ruled out the possibility of the Dutch striker making his debut in Saturday’s Manchester derby.

Following the decision to terminate Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract in December, Manchester United have been eager to add another striker to Erik ten Hag’s squad. It looks like they’ve done that by signing Wout Weghorst on loan until the end of the season, as per Fabrizio Romano.

The Netherlands quickly emerged as a top target, with a loan deal on the verge of being completed.

Weghorst will be a welcome addition to the squad because I think Ten Hag would be naive to rely on Anthony Martial. He has not been available enough this season and the team has had to learn how to win without a recognised centre-forward.

Sadly, Weghorst has not been cleared in time to line up against City tomorrow.

“We are close,” Erik ten Hag told reporters, as per the Manchester Evening News. “He will not be available for tomorrow.”

It seems a bit crazy to label this a blow for United because Weghorst wasn’t available before this point of the season. His addition is a bonus if anything.

Ten Hag added: “Weghorst wasn’t even available in the last weeks, it would be a bonus if he was. We have won a lot of games without Anthony Martial.”
