Paul Merson urges Manchester United to make Harry Kane bid

Former Arsenal star turned pundit Paul Merson says he would be baffled if Manchester United did not make a move to sign Harry Kane in the summer.

The striker has 18-months left on his current deal at Tottenham Hotspur and could seek an exit in the summer.

Kane has expressed a desire to leave Tottenham in the past and this could be his best opportunity yet.

Writing for the Daily Star, Merson said: “In an age where clubs spend money for fun and world-class centre-forwards are a rarity, I would find it crazy if Manchester United did not break the bank for Harry Kane.

“You can look all around the world, rack your brains and round up every scout within your network and the answer is right there in front of you. There is nobody that comes close to Kane that is currently available.

“If United ever want to catch Manchester City, they’ve got to go and get Kane. Everybody wants a striker and is searching far and wide but the best centre-forward is staring everybody in the face.”

It baffles me why Merson would want United to sign Kane because it would only see us become a stronger unit and, therefore, make winning trophies a more difficult task for his beloved Arsenal.

Kane has not won any trophies in his career but now could be the right time to join United as Erik ten Hag does an impressive job in his first season.

Harry Kane on the verge of breaking Jimmy Greaves record

The 29-year-old scored goal humber 265 for Spurs as they beat League One side Portsmouth 1-0 in the FA Cup. It means he is just one goal behind Jimmy Greaves (266) in the club’s all-time record goalscoring charts.

Once he gets that out of the way, Kane might start thinking about scoring goals for United next season. A report from ESPN suggests he is one of three strikers being considered by the Red Devils.

Tottenham face Arsenal this weekend and that might be the game that Kane levels or breaks the record set by Greaves.

  1. Merson would of course love Kane to leave Tottenham. I think United would be better off buying Sakar from Arsenal. What does Merson think?
