Harry Maguire told Man United career is over as pundit suggests Newcastle move

Harry Maguire has endured a difficult 18 months at Manchester United and his future at the club is increasingly uncertain amid Erik ten Hag’s preference for Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

Varane and Martinez have forged an unbreakable bond at the heart of United’s defence and as things stand, it’s highly unlikely that Maguire will be able to claim a first-choice spot again this season.

Maguire has started just four games in the Premier League this season, having previously been one of the first names on the teamsheet under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Now, former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy has addressed Maguire’s situation at Old Trafford, arguing his career at the club could be over and suggesting Newcastle may make a move.

Quizzed on whether Maguire has a future at United going forward, Murphy was unequivocal in his response: “No, but he has a good future somewhere else because he’s still a great talent,” he told talkSPORT.

“He’s got leadership qualities, he’s learnt at United. Yes, he’s had a little bad spell but a lot of it has been good. He’s done brilliantly on the international stage at big tournaments, he’s great on set-plays, he’s a good character.

“He’s not a ‘big time Charlie’, he’s humble, he looks like a great lad, good family, good support network around him. He’s going to have many takers.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if someone like Eddie Howe went for Maguire as another choice for them. A club like Newcastle could do a lot worse than get someone like Maguire.”

SN’s verdict…
It’s definitely looking bleak for Maguire. He has been offered plenty of opportunities this season and although he has not been overly poor, Varane and Martinez have impressed to the point where they are virtually undroppable.

Maguire has several years remaining on his contract at United and he’s approaching the wrong side of 30, meaning United are unlikely to recoup much of the money they shelved out for him in 2019.

Ultimately, Ten Hag’s opinion matters more than anyone’s and if Maguire is viewed as healthy competition for the pair mentioned above, he will be kept around. At the end of the day, he is also the captain and has been for the last three years.

  1. Must be a Man U fan writing this article hoping to get rid of the donkey.
