Besiktas release statement amid Manchester United’s interest in Wout Weghorst

Besiktas are not going to give up Wout Weghorst without a fight.

The Netherlands international is currently on loan at Besiktas from Burnley, however, it sounds like Weghorst is pushing for a mid-season switch.

A report from The Star suggested there is imminent activity surrounding a deal for Weghorst, with the Dutchman due to arrive in Manchester to undergo a medical this week.

However, the Turkish giants do not plan on making it easy for United to sign the 30-year-old centre-forward. Weghorst is Besiktas’ top goalscorer this season and they won’t find a better player in January.

Besiktas issued a statement which read. as per The Athletic: “The news that the player in question will leave the team on Tuesday is completely untrue. The initiative regarding Wout Weghorst belongs entirely to Besiktas Gymnastics Club.

“We also state that if there is a development on this issue, our esteemed community and the public will be informed.”

In an ideal world, United will be able to get a deal over the line in time for the Manchester derby.

Hopefully, Besiktas don’t block the move this month and all three parties — United, Burnley and the Turkish outfit — can come to an agreement.

Weghorst would give United an aerial presence, which is not something you can say about other attackers at the club. He also can play in a high intensity system.
