Memphis Depay becomes likeliest loan option for Manchester United

Manchester United are in the transfer market looking for a new striker on loan and one leading journalist believes Memphis Depay is the likeliest option.

The Red Devils have already signed Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland on loan for the remainder of the season, and there are doubts as to whether the Glazers will permit permanent signings at a time the cash flow is limited and they are trying to sell up.

According to Miguel Delaney’s newsletter for The Independent, Manchester United were offered Atletico Madrid’s Alvaro Morata on a loan deal, although they aren’t currently interested in taking that up.

Delaney stresses that United don’t have the budget for a £70m outlay on a striker, but there is an understanding that the club is worth more if it is in the Champions League. That’s why we could see the Reds push the boat out a little to sign a goalscorer in January.

Delaney wrote: Manchester United are one of a few clubs to have been offered Atletico Madrid’s Alvaro Morata on a loan deal, although they aren’t currently taking that up. It marks quite a change from five years ago, when he was the club’s first choice, but they went for Romelu Lukaku. It’s also going to be different to then in terms of expenditure. United don’t have the budget for anything like a £70m outlay on a striker. While many will point to the fact the Glazers are open to selling, the other side of that is the club is worth more if it is the Champions League. That’s why we may well see some movement this January along with goalkeeper Jack Butland. A loan move for someone like Memphis Depay looks likeliest, although it would take a lot to change for the club to go for Morata.”

A return to United could be on the cards for Memphis and he has just six months left on his contract at Barcelona.

Due to the ongoing financial crisis at Barcelona, Xavi won’t be expecting any new signings so he may want to keep hold of the Dutch forward.

Alternatively they could use a loan deal to save money on wages for the next six months at least.

  1. No, he has already been proved inadequate in the premiership, the English game is too physical for him, so not an option in my eyes !

    1. I assume you dismissed Mo Salah when he joined Liverpool and Kevin De Bruyne after signing for City.

Both ‘flopped’ at Chelsea in their earlier years. It happens.

Personally, I’m happy to trust Erik ten Hag on this. United should sign whoever he identifies as his preferred target.
