Memphis Depay has instigated talks with Manchester United over transfer

Memphis Depay is emerging as a possibility for Manchester United in January.

The Red Devils considered a move for the Barcelona forward in the summer, but that never materialised and he is now looking for a transfer midway through the season.

According to The Athletic, Memphis Depay ‘instigated’ talks with his former club on his own accord. This could open the door for the Netherlands international to return to Old Trafford.

After leaving PSV Eindhoven in 2015, Depay struggled to make an impact during his time at Manchester United and it was only a matter of time before he was sold again.

Depay joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Lyon in 2021, but he has fallen down the pecking order this season, starting just two games in La Liga so far. The 26-year-old’s contract at Camp Nou expires this summer which means he should be available in a cut-price deal.

Barcelona manager Xavi has made it clear that he doesn’t want to lose the Dutch forward for the remainder of the season.

“I don’t want anyone to leave,” Xavi told reporters, as quoted by The Metro. “I’m delighted with the squad.

“It seems there won’t be a market for us. I’m happy with Depay.

“His attitude is good and he will be important for us. He has the ability to make a difference. He’ll have minutes. Like all of them.”
