Benfica manager gives update on Enzo Fernandez future

Benfica manager Roger Schmidt knows that he will lose Enzo Fernandez in the near future.

Manchester United have been long-linked with the Benfica midfielder, who played a key role in Argentina’s World Cup triumph this winter, but sadly Erik ten Hag does not have a transfer kitty to compete for signings like this.

Now, reports suggest that Chelsea are leading the race to sign Fernandez, while Liverpool are also said to be interested in the midfielder.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano wrote about Fernandez’s future in a recent column for Caught Offside. He believes that the former River Plate star would love a move to the Premier League and he is pushing to make it happen.

Romano also claims that discussions are underway with Chelsea, with the Evening Standard suggesting the London outfit are willing to pay the player’s £105m release clause.

Speaking about Fernandez’s future, Schmidt said (via Manchester Evening News): “Until December 31st we are sure that we have all the players and nobody can leave. For now, we’re on the eve of the game and I’m calm. Then the market opens up and when you have players with great talent, you always run the risk of losing players. For now, we’re focused on tomorrow’s [Friday’s game].”

With the £105m figure doing the rounds, United must be gutted they didn’t sign Fernandez in the summer – after tracking him prior to his move to Benfica.

We’ve missed the boat on this one.
