Erik ten Hag refuses to get drawn on Cody Gakpo after Liverpool agree deal to sign PSV forward

Erik ten Hag refused to get drawn on Cody Gakpo but had no problem revealing that Manchester United were in the market for a new striker in January.

The PSV Eindhoven forward had been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford since the summer when Erik ten Hag opted for Antony from Ajax as his primary attacking option.

Instead it looks like Gakpo will join Liverpool and a lot of newspapers will try to make it seem like they stole a march on United to sign the Netherlands star.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit last month last left Ten Hag light in the attacking department, despite the prolific form of Marcus Rashford. As fans we hope Rashford can continue on the goalscoring front, while Anthony Martial stays fit for the remainder of the season.

Rashford scored his 10th goal of the season on Tuesday night by scoring the first goal in a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest. The win means United sit fifth in the league with a +3 goal difference.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Video Sport after the game, Ten Hag said (via Evening Standard): “I don’t talk about individual cases. We are looking for offensive players, looking for a striker, that would be good because we have so many games coming.

“We want to keep playing in all the competitions we are in, we want to keep going to the end of the season so you need numbers to keep competing.”
