Marcus Rashford believes winning Carabao Cup will boost United’s confidence and desire

Marcus Rashford has set his sights on winning the Carabao Cup this season.

Manchester United progressed to the quarter-finals of the competition after a convincing 2-0 win against Burnley on Wednesday.

The goals came from Christian Eriksen, marking his second goal as a Red, and Rashford, who completed an exceptional solo run and finish to secure the win.

He was one of five players to start the match having recently returned from international duty. The 25-year-old represented England at the World Cup in Qatar and was instrumental in their progression to the quarter-finals before bowing out of the tournament after a 2-1 loss to France.

Still, Rashford can keep his head held high as he has been outstanding for both his club and country this season, and his goal on Wednesday evening proved his desire to pick up where he left off and not let the international upset impact his motivation and determination to win with United.

Post-match, the forward reflected on his strike and told MUTV: “I was dribbling, just to try and entice one of them [Burnley defenders] to come out. I wanted to play it to Antony, but I think his run was a little bit early or me lifting my head up was a bit late. When I did lift my head up, I saw a gap, and I think he [Antony] was offside anyway so I thought, ‘I’m just going to go for it and see if I can create an opportunity.’”

He then went on to hit a superb strike in front of an adoring Stretford End.

Regarding United’s progression in the Carabao Cup, he added: “It’s massively important [for us to progress] because I feel like the year when we won it [2017], it just pushed us. We were chasing that feeling again. It does a whole lot for your confidence and for your desire to keep winning, so it’ll be massive for us to try and win that, and all the players and staff are giving everything to do that.”

The Red Devils have been drawn at home to Charlton in the quarter-finals. Their opponents are the only non-Premier League side left in the competition, with rivals Manchester City also still fighting to lift the trophy.

The tie will take place the week commencing January 9, 2023.
