Dean Holden was only appointed Charlton Athletic manager three days ago and he already has a tasty tie in the Carabao Cup coming up against Manchester United.

Manchester United overcame Burnley in the last round after a convincing 2-0 win at Old Trafford. In the same round, Charlton overcame top flight opponents Brighton and they will be looking to do the same against United.

It would be some feat for Holden if Charlton were able to overcome Erik ten Hag’s United, who look destined to book their place in the semi-finals after getting the easiest draw in the round, which has been a rarity for a number of years.

Speaking about the tie, Holden said numerous times that Charlton ‘will go up there’ – when there is not an alternative route for the traveling side (via Manchester Evening News): “It’s an incredible draw for everybody. I’m sure we’ll get a big ticket allocation, so no doubt we’ll sell out. We’ll go up there, it will be a throwback for some of the fans who used to go there in the Premier League.

“Again it’s a taste of what is available if you do the hard yards in the early rounds, when there is not much glamour. It just shows you that if you put the hard work in, the rewards can be there.

“I understand it has given everybody some optimism. We will go up there and we’ll give a good account of ourselves. We’ll go up there and try and get through to the next round.”

I, for one, want to see United go all the way in the Carabao Cup this season. We need to win a trophy and I completely accept that the League Cup is a second rate competition, but we’ve gone too many years without lifting silverware and it would be great to see Ten Hag claim his first honour as United boss.

Charlton shouldn’t cause too many problems but it will be an enjoyable trip for their fans nonetheless. A night out watching the mighty United.
