William Gallas criticises Manchester United duo Maguire and Rashford

Former Arsenal and Chelsea defender William Gallas has suggested that Manchester United captain Harry Maguire isn’t ‘good enough’ to play for a team in the Premier League’s top six.

There is no denying that Maguire has endured a difficult campaign so far this season, but he did star at the World Cup as one of the top defenders.

This doesn’t change how I feel about who should be starting at centre-back for United (Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane), but I think people like Gallas are going in on Maguire for the sake of it these days.

Gallas may be right – but, how after a number of solid performances at the World Cup can he find the time to criticise Maguire? Surely it’s time to credit the England defender on his recent performances for the Three Lions. He goes a bit overboard when he suggests Maguire should not be a target for other sides – in the same breathe.

“Manchester United is too big a club for Maguire, that is why he has not performed there,” Gallas said, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “I’m not sure if Tottenham will want him at the back. They need defenders but Maguire would not be good for them. He is almost 30 years old and he does not have as much speed as others.

“The older Maguire gets, the less speed he will have. Tottenham should invest in players who are younger and who are the future. They should try to sign Gvardiol over Maguire.”

Gallas also claimed that Marcus Rashford isn’t good enough for Paris Saint-Germain, saying: “Rashford to PSG will not happen. Marcus has not been good enough since the beginning of the season and has not shown how good he was when he first started playing for Man United.

“He was unbelievable, however now it is completely different. PSG already have players in that position so they do not need Rashford.”

Again, I may be mistaken, but has Gallas watched any Premier League football this season or even the World Cup? Rashford has been getting back to his best for United and he was England’s most prolific forward, despite featuring from the bench for the most part.

No wonder England didn’t go as far as they would have liked.
