Opinion: Manchester United are linked with Alvaro Morata, do they take the risk?

Manchester United have been linked with Alvaro Morata for a January transfer, but should they oversee a deal?

According to ESPN, United are interested in the Atletico Madrid forward after making an initial approach in the summer, before opting away from making a bid.

Morata has somewhat revitalised his career at the World Cup after providing three key goals for Spain on the world’s biggest stage. In the La Liga this season, he has five goals and one assist in 14 appearances, which is top form for a striker in the top division.

Why United should move on from Morata

However, in the 2021/2022 campaign, he completed a season-long loan move to Juventus and scored just 12 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions.

United require a prolific forward, and Morata is realistically not it. Whilst his trophy cabinet makes for impressive viewing, he has failed to ever really make a statement at the several clubs he has been at.

The Spaniard was used sparingly at Real Madrid; starting 22 out of 96 matches in La Liga and two in 27 in the Champions League.

At Chelsea, Morata picked up considerably more game time than in Spain but left having scored 24 goals in 72 matches.

He is now 30 years old and is highly unlikely to provide 20 Premier League goals a season, in a team in which hitting the back of the net is often hard to do.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit has now left just Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to hold down the forward role, so the need for new signings is crucial once club football resumes.

Still, Morata is more of a risk than a safe option. He has played in the Premier League and struggled to take it by storm, is he really going to do that now – three years later?
