Man United may not make January signings, says super-agent

Manchester United’s positioning ahead of the January transfer was already interesting but Cristiano Ronaldo’s controversial departure last month has added fuel to fire.

The 37-year-old failed with a move to engineer an exit last summer but ultimately remained at Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag was reluctant to use him and the friction between the pair eventually led to his contract being mutually terminated.

Ronaldo’s exit has left a gaping hole in the United side, with Anthony Martial becoming the only out-and-out striker at the club. The Frenchman is one of Ten Hag’s favourites but his injury record does not fill supporters with confidence.

United’s spending over the summer took them past £200 million – the most they have ever spent in one transfer window – and that could potentially impact their ability to recruit in January.

Now, super-agent Rob Segal has admitted that United could let the month-long transfer period pass them by without strengthening the squad.

“I wonder whether they will buy either in January,” Segal told CaughtOffside on whether United are going to make moves for Memphis Depay or Cody Gakpo.

I can tell you this, Man United’s decision-makers are not at the World Cup. They are just watching the games at home, at this stage, I think if they do sign anyone, Ten Hag is more likely to push for players that he’s worked with in the past.”

SN’s verdict…
Ten Hag may have been able to accept minimal transfer activity this winter if Ronaldo was still an option but his departure is alarming in terms of squad depth.

United were already lacking in that area and the Dutch manager will be pushing the board to give him more players to work with – at least until the end of the season.

The January window is often a loan market and United could explore that, with a striker specifically being the target, presumably.
