Manchester United face interest from three European giants in race for Cody Gakpo

Manchester United are alongside three clubs in the race for PSV’s Cody Gakpo.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Liverpool are all interested in signing the prolific forward.

Gakpo is currently one of the hottest talking points of the World Cup, having scored in three consecutive matches and secured the Netherlands’ qualification to the knockout stages.

At club level, his numbers have been nothing short of remarkable; 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 appearances.

Voetbal International has reported that the Dutch side will attach a £43 million price tag to their man following the tournament.

StrettyNews’ verdict

The 23-year-old will not settle for being a bench player wherever he goes, which may rule Liverpool out of the equation. The Merseyside team dropped £85 million on Darwin Nunez over the summer, and he still rotates with Roberto Firmino.

Real Madrid will be seeking a long-term replacement for Karim Benzema in the No.9 role, especially after missing out on Erling Haaland to Manchester City. Similarly, Bayern are yet to secure a like-for-like Robert Lewandowski alternative and their form has wavered this season without him.

At Old Trafford, he will be contesting with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, though the latter is comfortable starting as a winger. The Frenchman’s fitness makes him an unreliable figure to count on solely up front, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit has opened the door for a new forward to join the squad.
