Didier Deschamps provides positive Raphael Varane fitness update

Raphael Varane has been injured since the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge last month and the 29-year-old was deemed to be a doubt for France ahead of this winter’s World Cup.

The Frenchman enjoyed a stellar start to the season prior to his untimely injury, forming an unbreakable partnership with summer signing Lisandro Martinez. Varane’s impressive form came after a highly disappointing first season, which was plagued by injuries.

Amid concerns that Varane will miss the chance to defend France’s World Cup trophy, manager Didier Deschamps has delivered a positive update on his fitness.

“He’s in his protocol,” Varane is quoted as saying by RMC Sport. “He’s stepped up his athletic work. He’s touched up the ball. He’ll touch it up today.

“He still has some steps to take until Thursday. He’s fine. He has good morale and good sensations. He is supposed to be available for the first match.”

Varane is expected to be one of the first names on Deschamps’ teamsheet in Qatar if he’s fit enough and considering his reaction that injury at Stamford Bridge, it’s certainly a relief to hear that he has recovered in time.

SN’s verdict…
The only worry United supporters will have is that Varane is being rushed back from the injury. His latest problem is another injury to the hamstring and that is mostly what haunted his first campaign at Old Trafford.

United are far from well-stocked at centre-back and Erik ten Hag’s men simply look like a better team when he’s on the pitch. Hopefully, he comes through the tournament unscathed and ready to help United when club football resumes next month.
