Didier Deschamps has given an update regarding Raphael Varane’s injury amid the forthcoming World Cup fixtures.

Deschamps has decided to call up Varane despite the centre-back’s injury that he sustained playing for Manchester United against Chelsea in October.

The defender was visibly emotional as he was forced off the pitch to receive treatment at Stamford Bridge.

Varane has not featured for the Red Devils since and has been a significant loss to the squad after being a key player in the first half of the season.

The 29-year-old has instilled confidence in to United’s backline and looks solid when partnered with summer signing Lisandro Martinez, who will also feature at the World Cup with his national side Argentina.

Deschamps confident for Varane to return in time

Deschamps explained his decision to bring the 29-year-old to Qatar with the squad, saying: “For Varane, it’s a little longer injury, but he will be available for the first match against Australia if all is fine.”

France will face Australia on November 22, giving Varane over a week to return to full fitness. The side are one of the favourites to win the competition after tasting glory in 2018 under Deschamps.

The update does, however, confirm that Varane won’t feature for the Reds until after the tournament. United’s first fixture back is on December 27 against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.
