PSV director rules out January transfer for United linked Cody Gakpo

PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United for months, but his club are ruling out any sale in the January transfer window.

Gakpo was in demand last summer which was saw speculation continue over the 23-year-old’s future.

PSV director Marcel Brands insists the Dutch youngster will not be sold in January but admitted he could move in the summer if an acceptable offer is proposed.

“No, this is not Cody Gakpo’s last match against Ajax,” Brands told ESPN.nl. “Next year he will also play the match in Eindhoven against Ajax. If it will be his last away match with PSV against Ajax? Yes, that is a possibility.”

Brands also revealed that United considered a move for Gakpo in the summer, which we knew, before the club prioritised its pursuit of Antony instead. Leeds United made an actual offer for the player but he thankfully remained at PSV for another season.

“Leeds United offered €30 million with €11m as a bonus. Six of them were to be payed if Leeds reached the Champions League. People said and wrote a lot about this, but no one within the organisation of PSV wanted to accept this,” he added. “If United offered the money that we wanted to have for Cody, then we would’ve sold him. You can not stop him then. With bonuses we wanted to go up until €50m.”

Gakpo has been in stunning form this season with nine goals and 11 assists to his name after 12 appearances across all competitions. He will become Europe’s most wanted attacker with a strong World Cup.
