(Video) Erik ten Hag lists positives from Real Sociedad win despite second-place finish

Manchester United have missed out on top spot in their Europa League group despite securing a 1-0 win at Real Sociedad on Thursday evening.

Erik ten Hag’s men needed to win by two goals to finish top of the group but now miss out on goal difference, with the result canceling out the Basque side’s 1-0 win at Old Trafford in September.

Alejandro Garnacho, who made just his second start of the season, scored the winner in the first half and Ten Hag has listed his performance as one of the several things he was happy about despite missing out on first place.

“You don’t always get what you deserve, so is football,” Ten Hag told BT Sport after the game. “First leg, you get a penalty that isn’t a penalty. Today we win, I’m happy with that.

“I’m happy with some other things, like the performance from Garnacho. Donny, back in the team. I think we make a really good goal with Garnacho. Some good chances as well.

“But of course, we are disappointed – we didn’t score two goals because that is what we needed.”

United are now unbeaten in their last nine games in all competitions and will be looking to extend that run further when they make the trip to Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Birmingham side have recently appointed Unai Emery and the Spaniard will take charge of his new side for the first time against United.
