Analysing Man Utd’s October Player of the Month nominees

Manchester United have named their four nominees on the shortlist for October’s Player of the Month award.

United started October awry after suffering a 6-3 defeat to derby rivals Manchester City. The team responded positively though, as they have not lost a game since.

The Red Devils are now on an eight-game unbeaten streak; winning six and drawing two matches. Their win against West Ham on Sunday boosted the side to fifth in the Premier League table, above rivals Chelsea and Liverpool and one point behind fourth-placed Newcastle with a game in hand, as well as being three points behind Tottenham Hotspur in third.

United have deemed four players to have had the most significant impact to the impressive run of form, the nominees are:

1. Casemiro

The Brazilian took a short while to adjust to the pace of the English top flight but has looked as comfortable as ever since becoming a regular starter. His injury-time header against Chelsea to secure a point for United, as well as his reaction to netting his first goal, showed his sheer determination and passion to be a part of this club. He is the exact kind of figure United have needed in the midfield for several years.

2. Diogo Dalot

Dalot has cemented his place in the starting eleven this season and is undoubtedly Erik ten Hag’s first-choice at right back. The Portugal international has accumulated 1,434 minutes of playing time across all competitions so far and will press, attack and defend for the entire 90 minutes without breaking a sweat. He headed home against Sheriff to open the scoring for the Red Devils midweek, which was a well-deserved goal for the 23-year-old.

3. Lisandro Martinez

Perhaps the most irreplaceable member of United’s starting eleven currently, Martinez has been instrumental to the recent run of form and results. In all competitions, the defence has acquired eight clean sheets, a factor the side struggled with considerably before the arrival of the Argentinian. Every block, interception and tackle is crucial to Martinez and he has inflicted the same passion and mentality on his partners in defence, as well as David De Gea.

4. Marcus Rashford

Rashford netted his 100th goal for the club on Sunday, which turned out to be the game-winner in a must-win clash for United. The 25-year-old has been at the club since he was seven, and his recent run of form will make any United fan proud of their homegrown talent. So far this season, the forward has already outdone his goal contributions of the 2021/2022 campaign, having netted seven goals and assisted three. He has been a game-changer in difficult ties and will have likely given Gareth Southgate a lot to consider when picking his England squad for the forthcoming World Cup.
