(Video) On This Day 2004: Arsenal tears as Rooney and Van Nistelrooy end unbeaten run

On this day in 2004, Manchester United ended Arsenalโ€™s 49-game unbeaten run at Old Trafford. Arsenal did not take the loss very wellโ€ฆ

A first-half penalty from Ruud van Nistelrooy had United halfway there at the interval before Wayne Rooney netted the winner on his 19th birthday.

It then caused the infamous โ€˜Battle of the Buffetโ€™ down the tunnel, when a bitter Cesc Fabregas threw a slice of pizza at Sir Alex Ferguson, who was beaming from the full-time whistle.

Post-match, Fergie said: โ€œThe best young players, like Rooney and Ronaldo, can handle the biggest games.โ€

Rooney certainly could โ€“ as he went on to score 15 times in 35 meetings with Arsenal in all competitions.

  1. Without a doubt the biggest bit of thievery EVER carried out in English football.Glorify it all you want .The football world knows what went on in that match was corruption.A shameless refereeing performance.Thereโ€™s actually a highlights video of Rileyโ€™s antics that day.Makes for grim viewing.Utd simply aimed to kick Arsenal off the park & that day ably abetted by a corrupt ref, succeeded.Otherwise would never have won.So enjoy it while you wait another ten or more seasons & counting for a title.
