Donny van de Beek’s World Cup dream is over

I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone that Donny van de Beek will not be going to the World Cup next month in Qatar.

The Manchester United midfielder returned from his loan spell at Everton last season, only to struggle with more injuries and now it has been confirmed that he has missed out on a place in the Netherlands squad for the World Cup.

Van de Beek has not been included in Louis van Gaal’s 39-man provisional Netherlands World Cup squad.

After managing just 19 minutes of first team football this season, I don’t think Van de Beek can raise an argument for deserving a place in Van Gaal’s squad this winter. He hasn’t even done enough to get into Ten Hag’s plans at Old Trafford.

Van de Beek has not been selected for a Netherlands squad in over 19-months. He wasn’t expecting a call up this time either – but it still means his World Cup dreams have come to a premature end. Now he will have to continue supporting his fellow countrymen from afar.

It raises questions about the 25-year-old’s future and whether he should accept that his spell at United has not gone to plan. United should definitely look to get rid in January or next summer.

United should try to use Van de Beek as a cushion in a deal to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven. Try keep everyone happy!
