Manchester United must wait for club medics to assess Raphael Varane before they know how long they will be without the French defender.

Raphael Varane faces a nervous wait to discover his World Cup fate after suffering a hamstring injury, as reported by Norwegian journalist Fredrik A. Filtvedt on Twitter.

He tweeted: “It is confirmed that it is a hamstring injury for Raphael Varane. The extent still unknown.”

The extent of the injury is still unknown, but Varane was reduced to tears as he hobbled off the pitch at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Only to be taunted by Chelsea fans as he walked around the pitch, the France international was dreading the prospect of missing out on next month’s World Cup.

Varane’s reaction suggested a bleak outlook, but Ten Hag did not sound as worried after the match when he spoke to reporters about the defender’s injury. He said we can all understand why he would get emotional, but everyone now must wait for the medics to do their job.

“There’s nothing in this moment, he came off but with an injury like this you always have to wait a minimum of 24 hours and the medics can do their job,” Ten Hag told reporters.

“I can understand, and I think we all probably can understand him being emotional.

“The medics have to do a job, make their assessment, set the right diagnosis and from there on we can come to a conclusion.”
