Chelsea revisit pursuit to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong

Despite being chased by Manchester United for over 100 days, Frenkie de Jong remained at Barcelona in the summer. Reports now suggest Chelsea have been in talks over the past week with the La Liga giants in a bid to clinch a deal for the midfielder.

Graham Potter may look to strengthen his midfield options in the January transfer window. The new Chelsea manager knows that both N’Golo Kante and Jorginho will be out of contract in the summer, and it goes without saying that they would benefit from a long-term replacement.

This could spell bad news for Manchester United should Erik ten Hag revisit last summer’s pursuit to sign Frenkie de Jong because Chelsea are reportedly eyeing up a swoop for the Netherlands international.

According to Todo Fichajes,De Jong is the player Chelsea are eager to sign, with the report suggesting they’re hoping to reach an agreement before the start of the World Cup.

De Jong is not getting the amount of game time he desires at Barcelona and he could make a move for the better of his career by joining Chelsea or United.

From watching the game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night, Potter’s side looked the team in desperate need of midfield reinforcements. Ten Hag has found his midfield juggernaut in Casemiro, who scored the late equaliser to make it 1-1.

Spanish publication Cadena SER suggested De Jong was unconvinced about the offer he received from Manchester United during the summer.

Only time will tell if he fancies it after all.
