Jaap Stam satisfied with how Ten Hag has dealt with Ronaldo situation

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has praised how Erik ten Hag has dealt with Cristiano Ronaldo in the wake of this week’s behaviour as the 37-year-old stormed towards the tunnel at the Stretford End on the 89th minute.

It was later revealed that Ronaldo refused instructions from Ten Hag to come off the bench and play the final minutes of the game.

In fact, Stam believes former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who initially brought Ronaldo to United, would have dished out his famous ‘hairdryer’ if the same happened during his time at the club. The Dutch defender won three Premier League titles and a Champions League at Old Trafford and feels Ten Hag dealt with the difficult situation well.

Ronaldo was an unused substitute against Tottenham through his own doing.

Stam told Football Daily: “I think it’s a normal reaction that ten Hag’s made, and Ronaldo knows that as well because a player of his experience, the quality he has, what he’s done.”

When asked how Fergie would have reacted to the incident, he said: “Talk about the hairdryer, it would have been a big hairdryer that one.”

Ten Hag reacted by axing Ronaldo from the squad to face Chelsea and Ronaldo has been asked to train on his own until further notice. We must remember that Ferguson wasn’t shy of a fallout with players if it was necessary, and he did it with some of the best.
