Peter Schmeichel has weighed in on the Cristiano Ronaldo situation after the forward was spotted leaving Old Trafford before the final whistle last night.
Manchester United saw out a crucial 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur on home turf last night that has boosted their hopes of a top-four position heading into November’s World Cup break.
Second half goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes secured the three points for Red Devils after outstanding performances from every member of the squad. Ronaldo was an unused substitute throughout the match and opted to depart before the full-time whistle down the Stretford End tunnel.
It was then confirmed by The Athletic that not only did he leave the pitch early, he left Old Trafford without celebrating the win with his teammates or manager. He did not alert Ten Hag of his decision to leave.
The Portugal international has netted only one goal in the Premier League this season and has started just two matches; Brentford and Newcastle United. United failed to score in both games.
Peter Schmeichel is disappointed in Ronaldo
The former United goalkeeper has reflected on the situation that occurred last night when talking to BBC Radio 5 Live, he said: “We’re in a period where the manager has got to rest players and make sure that everyone is fresh and also give everyone a chance to be fit for the World Cup.
“Leaving like that, it creates everything we don’t want at the moment, he would’ve known that it would make headlines.
“It’s the first time that I can say I am disappointed with him. Normally I back him, I understand the situation. The issue here is he’s such a big player, he’s such a big presence. Is it a case of playing him or letting him leave?”
