Michael Carrick set to become Middlesbrough manager

Manchester United hero Michael Carrick is set for a return to football, with the former Reds midfielder tipped to become the next Middlesbrough manager.

Carrick took a break from football after overseeing three games as caretaker manager at Old Trafford last year, winning two of them and drawing one.

The 41-year-old was spotted in the United end during the 2-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park earlier this month but he will not have much time for that anymore.

According to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, Carrick is now expected to become the next Middlesbrough manager after an agreement was struck between the two camps.

As per the report, Carrick is set to sign the contract within the next 24 hours and the former England midfielder is now finalising the makeup of his backroom staff.

In another indication that Carrick’s appointment is simply a matter of time, it’s also reported that official confirmation from Middlesbrough is expected before this weekend’s round of fixtures.

SN’s verdict…
He didn’t manage United for long but in the three games that he did, Carrick showed flexibility and proved that there is an innovative mind there – much like when he was a player.

Taking a job at a struggling Championship club is not always full of glamour but often, it’s a step you have to take when you’re trying to build your career.

Hopefully, Carrick does well at Middlesbrough and takes them back to the Premier League.
