Middlesbrough are on the hunt for a new manager following their sacking of Chris Wilder earlier this season and Michael Carrick, the United hero, has emerged as one of the candidates.

Carrick has been out of a job since leaving United at the end of 2021 when Ralf Rangnick signed on as interim manager but could now be set for a return to football.

Last week, it was reported that Middlesbrough were keen on talking to Carrick as they had earmarked him as a potential candidate for the role.

Now, BBC journalist Simon Stone is reporting that Carrick is set to hold talks with the struggling Championship club as they attempt to save their season.

After many months of anonymity, Carrick has been making headlines for more than just his links with Middlesbrough. The former Red was spotted in the away end at Goodison Park last weekend.

SN’s verdict…
Carrick’s three-game spell in charge of United last year was brief but it was also convincing. United won two out of the three games and drew a difficult game at Stamford Bridge.

His involvement in both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backroom staff shows that he’s thought of highly and it would be good to see him get his first managerial job in football.

Middlesbrough are, however, in a precarious situation and Carrick will be thinking long and hard about this opportunity before he commits.
