Harry Kane proud of Harry Maguire despite mistakes against Germany

England captain Harry Kane has come out in support of teammate Harry Maguire.

The Manchester United centre-back is being criticised from all corners following his performance against Germany in the UEFA Nations League.

Maguire was controversially selected for the England squad despite losing his place in the United starting eleven this season. On top of that, he hasn’t done anything to suggest Erik ten Hag made a mistake in dropping him after the 4-0 defeat against Brentford.

England drew 3-3 and he was at fault for the visitor’s first two goals. Maguire was also seen limping after the match and Kane has confirmed that he played on through injury for the final 10 minutes, which probably wasn’t the wisest thing to do.

Kane told reporters that he was proud of Maguire for showing ‘great character’.

“When you make individual mistakes, you’re going to be gutted, but we’re a team,” Kane told reporters after the match, as per the Manchester Evening News. “Harry [Maguire] had a pretty decent injury at the end there, but carried on for the final 10 minutes on almost one leg.

“Great character, really proud of him.”

Maguire issues apology for performance

The Manchester United captain issued an apology after committing a number of mistakes against Germany in the UEFA Nations League.

On Instagram, Maguire wrote: “Mistakes are part of the game, I apologise. Great fight back and spirit to get us back into the game by the lads. Take the positives and look forward to Qatar. The tough times will make us stronger.”

Questions over Maguire’s place in Southgate’s side will be asked for the foreseeable future.
