Tyrell Malacia admits he disagreed with Louis van Gaal decision

Tyrell Malacia has enjoyed a sparkling start to life at Manchester United by almost immediately becoming the first-choice left-back under Erik ten Hag.

Luke Shaw, who has been a permanent fixture in the side for the last four years, started the first two games but was then dropped in favour of Malacia.

Malacia is also a regular in the Netherlands fold, managed by former United manager Louis van Gaal. The former Feyenoord defender started neither of their UEFA Nations League fixtures during this international break but there was an interesting talking point after their game against Belgium.

Malacia, who is primarily a left-back, was a second-half substitute when he replaced Nathan Ake in the 1-0 win. He was used as a left-sided centre-back as opposed to a wing-back or traditional full-back.

After the game, Malacia admitted that he did not agree with Van Gaal’s decision to use him there but insisted that he must continue after holding talks with the manager.

It was completely different. I’m used to going along in the attack. And with the national coach? He explained a situation to me. I did not agree with it at the time. But you also have to continue. After the game we talked about it for a while,” He’s quoted as saying by NU.nl, via Sport Witness.

I prefer to play in my own position. That’s where I’m doing well now and that’s where I feel the best. But if the trainer needs me as a central defender, I’m ready.”

Malacia will now head back to Manchester ahead of what will most likely be his first appearance in the storied Manchester derby on Sunday.

United will be aiming for five consecutive wins on the road whilst City are continuing their chase for a third straight league title. In this fixture at the Etihad Stadium, United have won two out of the last three games.
