Wayne Rooney suggests Man Utd don’t need to sign Casemiro

Manchester United have finally bolstered their midfield this summer after the club confirmed that Casemiro, the Real Madrid and Brazil star, will be joining after an agreement was reached between the two clubs.

The 30-year-old is believed to be undergoing a medical this weekend and could be in the stands at Old Trafford on Monday to watch the game against Liverpool.

Casemiro’s arrival has been welcomed by United supporters after nearly all of this summer’s transfer window was spent trying to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.

United have been in dire need of a defensive midfielder for several years but now, Wayne Rooney has suggested that Casemiro is a player they didn’t need to sign.

“Casemiro will undoubtedly improve United,” he began. “He’s a good player. I’ve played against him and he’ll bring a bit of character, a bit of work rate, but is he exactly what United need? I’m not sure. This goes back to the need to look to the future.

“The Casemiro deal seems to have come from nowhere — I’d be surprised if he was a player identified as a priority to bring in when Ten Hag arrived. It looks like, having been unable to sign De Jong, United just reacted to him being available,” Rooney added.

A deal to bring Casemiro to Old Trafford has not been finalised yet so he cannot take part in Monday’s game but if everything goes well, Ten Hag will be hopeful of fielding the Brazilian against Southampton the following week.

SN’s verdict…
It’s difficult to explain just how much United needed to sign a player like Casemiro and it’s frustrating that Rooney didn’t elaborate. A defensive midfielder should have been signed years ago and it’s one of the reasons United have found themselves in an uncontrollable nosedive for the last couple of years.

Take one glance at United for the last three seasons and even the most moderate onlooker could identify that a defensive midfielder was missing.

In Casemiro, United have recruited one of the best in the business and one third of the best midfield of all time.
