Manchester United’s stance on Harry Maguire after Chelsea interest

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is coming under increasing pressure after the Reds’ tough start to the season and his role in Erik ten Hag’s leaky defence.

Earlier this summer, there was speculation over whether Ten Hag would retain Maguire as the side’s skipper but the Dutchman put his faith in the 29-year-old, confirming his status as captain in his first pre-season press conference.

The arrivals of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in the space of 12 months could put Maguire’s place in danger and now, Chelsea are said to be interested in the England star.

That’s according to The Guardian, who say that Thomas Tuchel’s side are interested in a potential swap deal involving Christian Pulisic if they fail in their pursuit of Leicester defender Wesley Fofana.

Fofana is Chelsea’s number one target but after having two proposals rejected, it’s claimed that they could instead turn to Maguire as a defensive reinforcement.

Despite his seemingly insecure position in the team, it’s said that Manchester United’s stance is that Maguire is not for sale.

SN’s verdict…
Eric Bailly is closing in on a move to Marseille in what would almost ensure that his career at Old Trafford is over. Should the Ivorian complete that deal, United cannot afford to let Maguire leave.

Despite his dwindling form, Maguire is evidently an important player for Ten Hag after he started both of United’s games so far this season ahead of Varane.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea follow up on their initial interest and whether United’s stance on Maguire changes in the event of serious effort from the London side.
