Yann Sommer emerges as one of three back-up keeper options for Manchester United

Manchester United are interested in Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer to compete with David de Gea.

The initial report comes from Swiss newspaper Blick, although transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has since tweeted the same information – adding that Sommer is one of three options in mind as Erik ten Hag identifies his preference to become second choice goalkeeper behind David de Gea.

I don’t think we’ll be signing a second-choice keeper who won’t be able to compete with De Gea, though. That’s why it would have made more sense for Dean Henderson to stay this season rather than last term when he didn’t make a single Premier League experience.

Henderson joined Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan and hit out at the false promises made to him in a recent interview.

De Gea made a number of costly errors against Brentford last week as United lost their second match of the season, only to add further questions about the Spaniard’s suitability to a team that wishes to play out from the back.

For Sommer, does he believe he can push De Gea out of his role as United’s primary keeper? Otherwise, he will jeopardise his chances of first team football ahead of the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Sommer has a deal at Gladbach which expires next year, but the Bundesliga outfit are offering him a new contract to stay until 2025.
