Antony no longer on the agenda for United as Ajax price winger out of transfer

Manchester United have pulled the plug on their transfer pursuit to sign Ajax winger Antony.

That is according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, who claims United will not be bowing to Ajax’s asking price for the Brazilian international, meaning he is being priced out of a move to Old Trafford.

Sheth tweeted: “A move for Antony “completely off the agenda” for Manchester United – UNLESS Ajax asking price came down significantly. United interested in Benjamin Sesko – among others – but RB Salzburg reluctant to sell & valuation very high.”

Ajax usually accept that they are a steppingstone for football’s brightest stars, although their stance on Antony completely goes against their policy and may make future signings think twice about joining the Eredivisie giants.

United could turn their attention to RB Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko, as Sheth suggests in his latest update. The 19-year-old is a centre-forward, whereas Antony prefers to play on the right, so they aren’t like-for-like by any stretch of the imagination.

However, Antony has been listed as one of Erik ten Hag’s attacking targets this summer.

The manager will be disappointed to miss out but it’s time to go back to the drawing board to identify an alternative of some sorts.

The new season starts on Sunday and United need to get more business done – with or without Antony.
