Erik ten Hag has already made two signings to strengthen Manchester United’s backline, with Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez both brought in by the Dutchman.
And now, there are suggestions that he already has his sights on another defender and supporters won’t be surprised to find out that the latest target is Dutch.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka has struggled to convince Ten Hag over this summer’s tour and thus far, Diogo Dalot has started all four games at right-back.
That has led to suggestions that United could be willing to move Wan-Bissaka on just three years after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signed him from Crystal Palace.
That has been echoed by reports in Italy, with Gazzetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness, claiming that Ten Hag has identified Inter defender Denzel Dumfries as Wan-Bissaka’s replacement if he departs Old Trafford.
As per the report, United are ‘ready’ to make an offer for Dumfries if they are able to sell Wan-Bissaka, who has two years remaining on his deal.
Furthermore, it’s claimed that Inter value the defender at €40m and have already discussed his potential departure with Chelsea during the negotiations which saw Romelu Lukaku return to Italy.
Dumfries was signed by Inter last year as a replacement for Achraf Hakimi and the Dutch international exceeded all expectations in his first year.
It’s easy to understand why United would hold an interest in Dumfries but as things stand, it’s looking unlikely that Wan-Bissaka will be moved on anytime soon.
Dalot has impressed on tour and he’s poised to start the season as United’s first-choice right-back. The Portugal defender does, however, have just one year remaining on his contract and if a new deal can’t be agreed, United may be forced to replace him.
