Katie Zelem over the moon after extending Manchester United contract

Katie Zelem says she is “over the moon” after extending her contract at Manchester United.

As captain of the Manchester United Women side, Zelem was part of the original squad when the first-team was reformed in 2018, which has already given her a huge place in the club’s history.

The aim from day one for the women’s team was to get into the WSL and that was achieved during Casey Stoney’s first season in charge. However, with Marc Skinner now in the job, the aim is to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time.

A signing like Maya Le Tissier could help us achieve that, but so will keeping Zelem at the club.

“I’m delighted to extend my contract here at United,” Zelem told ManUtd.com.

“Being captain of this wonderful football club is a privilege and something that I am honoured to continue into another exciting season for this group of players. I want to thank the fans for all their support since I joined in 2018 and look forward to making more winning memories together.”

Zelem also took to Twitter to react to the news, saying she is “over the moon to have extended” her stay at United.

Zelem was unlucky not to make the England squad for the European Championships and she believes the Lionesses can go all the way in the tournament.

“Katie displays the values and qualities to captain this team,” he told club media.

“We are delighted that she will continue to lead this group of players on and off the field. Katie showed last season that she possesses the character to consistently challenge and improve herself, whilst pushing her teammates to do the same.

“We look forward to Katie leading our team into many successful seasons to come.”
