DC United confirm Wayne Rooney as new head coach

Wayne Rooney has jumped straight back into management after being named as the new head coach of his former club DC United in Major League Soccer.

The 36-year-old walked away from the Derby County job last month following a tumultuous spell where his own reputation as a manager improved despite the non-stop chaos off the pitch at Pride Park, but he feels like it’s the right time to return to the game he loves.

Manchester United’s record goalscorer has wasted no time, although he will have to wait for completion of a visa application before he can formally take up his new role in charge of DC United.

Rooney previously enjoyed a two-year playing spell in Washington and Phil Neville, currently in charge of Inter Miami, believes the former England striker has what it takes to be a success in the American game.

“DC United announced today that Wayne Rooney has been named as the club’s new head coach,” DC United said in a statement on Tuesday evening

“Interim head coach Chad Ashton will remain in charge of the team until Wayne Rooney has received his work visa.”

It’s an exciting chapter for Rooney and we would like to wish him the very best at DC United. Still, it’s a shame that he wasn’t really given the chance to build on something at Derby – through no fault of his own!
