Lyon pull out of race to sign Tyrell Malacia as Dutch left-back closes in on Manchester United transfer

With Manchester United closing in on a deal to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, we suspected that once that transfer was completed, we would see the club move quickly to make more signings.

You could argue United no other choice with the Premier League season starting in early August. As a fan you want to see them back the new manager.

On Tuesday, The Mirror claimed De Jong would be United’s first signing of the summer despite the sudden developments in a deal to sign Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia.

As per the report, United have seen bids accepted for both players and the deal to bring De Jong to Old Trafford will see them pay an initial £56 million plus add-ons, ultimately taking the transfer to £70 million.

French newspaper L’Equipe report Malacia has made up his mind to join United over Lyon.

Lyon reportedly tried to increase their offer by €1m to get closer to United’s bid, but it’s now deemed too little too late with Malacia set to join Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

In a more recent update, however, The Athletic claim Lyon have now pulled out of the race to sign Malacia which means United are in a one-horse race to sign the 22-year-old.

United need better full-backs in the coming years, although I am surprised that we’ve moved for a left-back before signing a right-back, with Luke Shaw more than capable of starting every week if he can reach his best form.

Unless Diogo Dalot can stop falling asleep in games, or Brandon Williams stays and plays at right-back, I suspect it will be an area of weakness next season. Even Burnley, who were relegated last season, took advantage of Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the past.
