Alejandro Garnacho handed new squad number at United

Pre-season training is underway at Manchester United, and several academy players have been spotted wearing new squad numbers.

At least 15 senior players returned to Carrington for training on Monday, while those who were on international duty were given extended breaks.

Erik ten Hag will aim to make this their toughest pre-season yet before the Premier League campaign starts in early August and that is something the fans want to hear after a disappointing 2021/22 campaign.

Alejandro Garnacho could be seen as an exception at Carrington since he played several games for Argentina’s U20 side during the summer, which shows how keen he is to impress the new manager.

The talented youngster wore the number 49 at training on Monday after wearing 75 last year, while Alvaro Fernandez was spotted with 42 instead of 74, as per the Manchester Evening News.

Matej Kovar was assigned the number 51 last season but has jumped to 40.

That said, United have yet to officially confirm their squad numbers, so there could be more changes between now and the new season.

Garnacho is only 17-years-old but we fully expect him to get more minutes in the first team this season.

Can Garnacho become back-up to Cristiano Ronaldo next season or is it too soon?
