Erik ten Hag suffers huge blow as midfielder rejects Old Trafford move

Erik ten Hag’s priority this summer has been to strengthen his new side’s midfield, with the departures of several senior figures in that area leaving Manchester United light.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been the new manager’s prime target and although it’s believed that talks are progressing between the Catalan club and United, a deal is yet to be completed.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that United had made a proposal to Christian Eriksen, who is a free agent after signing a six-month deal with Brentford in January.

Now, it looks like Ten Hag has suffered his first big bow in the transfer market as it’s being reported that the Danish international has rejected the chance to move to Old Trafford.

That’s according to TalkSPORT, who despite providing a positive update on United’s pursuit of De Jong, state that Eriksen is believed to have turned down a move to United.

SN’s verdict…
Ten Hag would consider Eriksen’s rejection a big blow to his plans but sealing a deal to bring De Jong to the club will have been his priority and losing out on his backup targets, with Eriksen thought to be one of them, will not bother him as much.

It’s likely that United will target another midfielder to sign alongside De Jong, with two senior players in that department leaving the club. Donny van de Beek’s return on loan could also offer Ten Hag an unexpected boost, with the pair enjoying success together at Ajax.

Interestingly, De Jong and Van de Beek were both mainstays in that scintillating Ajax side which dazzled Europe by reaching the 2018/19 Champions League semi-finals.

  1. There was no time I supported buying of Eriksen by Man U. I prefer younger players to players like Eriksen. Except the player is exceptionally good.
We need to channel our energy to young and talented players. We don’t want a repeat of that kind of shambolic performance next season.
All we need in the middle of the pack is a good ball breaker and a strong defensive midfielder, a right wing, a forward, two center backs, one left back and a right back.
Then the following players should allow to go:-
Mata, Pogba, Lingard, Cavani, Matic, Alex, Jones and Rashford, and wait if we will not finish well next season.

    1. Buying? He would have come on a free probably for two years which means wages only. Would have been a no brainer imo because he’s an excellent player and would be perfect for a couple of years until United find other midfield replacements for effing Fred, Matic and Mata.

  2. Ericksen not good enough for utd that’s why he rejected the chance utd is above his level and he can’t fit in utd are in a rebuild process and with that in mind they need young talented players like from 25 yrs down to 17 yrs old any age above of player above 26 should not be acceptable let build for the future man utd is a massive club whether they in the champions league or not so average and overrated players are afraid to play for them

  3. The Glazers are didgeridoo give as much money for Transfers as he need to build a team that can challenge in the premier league

    1. The challenge is that you over take along to buy good players and at end you use too much money for fake players due to pressure from other teams after buying good ones

  4. Jude Bellingham from Dortmund would have been a credible addition. Erickson is ageing… So a youthful player is recommendable

  5. Jude Bellingham from Dortmund would have been a credible addition. Erickson is ageing… So a youthful player is recommendable

  6. Just a waste of time concentrating on then n im the end get NOTHING….BTW time IS running out….rivals have got their men…UTD still has got NO ONE.

  7. I don’t know what Rashford is still doing at United.I thought that guy is now into charity and is no more a footballer, the worst player man u paraded Last year

  8. If the manager get 70% of his priority signings I’m sure he will be satisfied. As long as our manager is happy we shall see good football.

  9. Sorry but this is wrong in many places.
    A) Romano said hes yet to decide
    B) first blow? (and you have typo there) hahha Timber and Nunez are not blows?

Sir it’s clear you’re not journalist

  10. Ten. Is enginering new man utd so patience is very much necesry. Hope good look utd will come soon. z new season of pl will z thoughest of all time.

  11. we,ll have the same old summer transfer window i,m afraid. spend all the time and just get one poss.two players and paying top dollar for them.

  12. @joseph thanks for that remembrance.. Rashford should go and get another club and see if he’ll be allowed to mess around with ball. If his no longer playing football let him face his charity donations. After all football brings this same money used for charity! Enough is enough, let Man United go get themselves good players to complete for trophy…

  13. Eriksen is a true professional. Despite his age, he will certainly do his best in any team he is with. I feel that he wants to be in a team where he will be playing regularly and not a bit-part player. He is reaching the tail-end of his career. He knows with United having Bruno and chasing De Jong, and even bringing back Donny, he will be below them in the pecking order.

  14. What is happening in United now is not a surprise because for years the owners had focused their attention only on benefits and profit. Neglecting the main cause and reasons they are making the profit at the first place which is good football and trophies. Now investors are wiser and players are scared to join a club where their carriers will be dwindled.

  15. ManU don’t need stars with big price tags, they need players that are committed to the game…

  16. Yes. ! Man united are a club with a tradition of playing hard fast intelligent football with players who will almost die for the club. NOT these egotistical jerks & ATTITUDE PLAYERS who think they are bigger than the club. Go for it ETH. Get rid of the wankers. Hope you achieve your goal. Mark from SA.
