Anthony Martial could stay at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag

Anthony Martial is one of several players facing uncertain futures at Manchester United this summer. The Frenchman is out of favour at the club after being sent out on loan by Ralf Rangnick earlier this year.

Martial failed to impress during his six-month stay at Sevilla and is expected to be part of the first group to return for pre-season preparations on Monday.

With two years remaining on his contract, it’s make-or-break for Martial at United and recent reports suggest that he could end up staying at the club this summer.

That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, who say that United are braced for the possibility of the 26-year-old staying beyond this summer’s transfer window due to the lack of offers for him.

As per the report, no club is making a concerted effort to sign him, which could leave United with no choice but to let Ten Hag make the best out of the situation.

Martial ended the 2019/20 season as the club’s top scorer and that impressive campaign won him a near-permanent place in the France squad but since then, his form has taken a dramatic turn for the worse.

He scored just four league goals in the next campaign and was eventually shown the door by Rangnick. Before that, he had lost his place under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was in charge when he was tied down to a five-year deal in 2019.

SN’s verdict…
Martial’s fall from grace was hard to predict and the prospect of struggling to find suitors was unlikely. His high wages are not helpful and the club will hope that he does not become yet another player to leave on a free transfer.

Six players have left on free transfers this summer and a number of players could do the same next year. Marcus Rashford and Fred are among those to have just 12 months remaining on their deals.

There is still time to recover for Martial but it’s highly unlikely that he will be offered a prolonged stay in the team under Ten Hag. Currently, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Elanga and Jadon Sancho are all ahead of him in the pecking order.
