Manchester United full-back nominated for Champions League award

Manchester United left-back Alex Telles has been nominated for the 2021/22 Champions League Goal of the Tournament award after his incredible volley against Villarreal in the group stages.

Although it was a disappointing season for United – not just in Europe as he failed to reach the Champions League quarter-finals – but Telles has been named on a 10-man shortlist for the best goal in this year’s competition.

Telles makes the list thanks to his volley in the 2-1 win over Villarreal, when United came from behind to take all three points in the group stages. Bruno Fernandes sent a free-kick towards the edge of the box, only for the Brazil international to hit it first-time into the back of the net.

Speaking about the goal back in December, Telles told ManUtd.com: “That was one of the most beautiful moments of my career, it’s a moment I will never forget. Firstly, because I was playing in a Champions League match for Manchester United and secondly scoring a goal in that context.

“We were behind, then we equalised, then turned the score around, it was a remarkable evening, an unforgettable evening. I share the merit of that goal with Bruno because that pass was his idea.

“Obviously because of my hard work, confidence and skill that I know I have I was able to score that goal. I will never forget that moment. The main thing is making the fans happy, I will never forget how happy they were in the stadium that night.”

As you can imagine, we were all thrilled at the weekend when Real Madrid won the final against Liverpool, but now I want to focus on Erik ten Hag’s job at Old Trafford which starts by getting us back into Europe’s biggest competition.

The Reds will compete in the Europa League again next season and it feels like we’ve been here far too many times in the past 10 years. Ten Hag needs to make United a force in England first, but he also needs to work on ensure we are in the Champions League every season. That should be the minimum.
