Statistical view: Nemanja Matic impressed in 3-0 Old Trafford bow

Manchester United cruised to victory on Monday evening when they welcomed Brentford to Old Trafford, with the 90-minute affair marking the final home game of the season.

There was little to play for but Ralf Rangnick’s side produced their best performance of 2022, with goals from Bruno Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane securing all three points.

Several of the player involved in the 3-0 win are unlikely to feature for the club again, with Nemanja Matic being one of the players confirmed to be leaving this summer.

The former Serbia international wound back the clock to produce a vintage performance and was given a warm ovation when he was substituted in the second half.

That sentiment from the Old Trafford faithful was deserved as well, having marshalled the United midfield against Thomas Frank’s combative side.

According to statistical analyst Statman Dave, the 33-year-old won all of his attempted tackled and completed all of his long passes, boasting a near-flawless 97% pass accuracy.

His tally of 82 completed passes was also the most in the game, with one of them leading to a created chance. The former Chelsea star also completed seven ball recoveries.

Matic is one of several midfielders set to leave the club, with Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard all also set to depart upon the expiry of their contracts. The exodus of midfielders is going to force United’s hand in bringing in replacements.
