Ruben Neves among midfielders scouted by Manchester United

Manchester United are set to be busy in the transfer market this summer, with incoming manager Erik ten Hag likely to oversee the biggest overhaul of a squad at United in modern history.

Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic, two senior midfielders, are both set to leave the club on a free transfer and with that department already light as it was, reinforcements will be needed.

Ten Hag has yet to officially take over at United, with his Ajax side chasing a third consecutive Eredivisie title. But it is understood that the Dutchman is in regular contact with United’s hierarchy.

Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves was linked with a move to United last summer but ended up staying at the Midlands club. According to the Birmingham Mail, a scout from United was present to watch the midfielder against Brighton earlier this weekend.

As per the report, there is growing anticipation at Wolves that Neves is playing out his final year at the club and with two years remaining on his deal, it could be the best time to cash out for Bruno Lage’s side. Neves only played the first half after recovering from a long injury lay-off and Wolves lost 3-0 – perhaps not the best audition.

Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma is also named as a player in United’s interest and the Mali international also featured in the game, impressing as his side stormed to yet another victory on the road.

SN’s verdict…
Neves is undeniably a talented midfielder but the last two years have raised concerns among many supporters. Regularly a placeholder on the Portugal bench, Neves has stagnated and United could look to sign someone on an upwards trajectory instead.

Bissouma, on the other hand, is a modern defensive midfielder and would likely be cheaper than Neves. The 25-year-old has just one year remaining on his contract at Brighton.
