Rangnick talks persuaded Manchester United star to stay in January

Edinson Cavani had the chance to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window, but a chat with interim manager Ralf Rangnick persuaded him to stay.

That is according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who tends to be very reliable with this stuff, building a whopping 6.9m followers on Twitter.

Cavani has been nothing more than a squad player this season, but he is set to move on at the end of the season when his contract expires. It might be time for the Uruguayan to play more regularly but at a lower level as there’s no way he gets ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo in the United team.

Still, Rangnick deserves credit for persuading Cavani to stay when there’s constant leaks of unhappiness within the camp. We need players who want to be at the club.

Romano tweeted: “Important to clarify that Cavani will be focused on Man Utd until end of the season. He’s set to try a new experience as free agent in June — but also had chance to leave in January & wanted to stay after direct talk with Rangnick.

“Cavani will be respectful, as always.”

It would have been a blow to lose Cavani mid-season, and his initial plan was to remain at Old Trafford until the expiry of his contract.
