Frank Lampard: Van de Beek has ‘integral’ role at Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard has reassured Donny van de Beek he will have an ‘integral’ role for the Toffees for the remainder of the season, despite benching the Manchester United loanee for his first Premier League match since his loan move in January.

Familiar surroundings for Van de Beek, sat on the bench, twiddling his thumbs.

But hopefully he starts to see the light at the end of the tunnel. This could be a turning point in his career, a route back on track with the help of game time at Goodison Park. Well, that is what United want, for the player to come back hungry and improved.

The Netherlands international has only started four Premier League games for United since his transfer from Ajax in 2020 and found himself on the bench again — but for Everton — at St. James’ Park on Tuesday night.

Van de Beek came on with 30 minutes left but Everton were already losing 2-1.

The Magpies went on to win the match 3-1 and it wasn’t really a night to remember for Van de Beek.

The new Everton manager said: “Donny came on at a difficult time in the game, let’s be honest.

“He made us tick a bit. He’s only going to get better, I know that. Him not starting tonight was more a reflection on the performance of Saturday. But he will be integral for us this season.”

That’s good news for Van de Beek. At least the manager rates him and he’s part of their plans this season. They host Leeds United tomorrow at 3pm and we’ll be hoping to see the Dutchman named in the starting XI.
